Chapter Four

A pounding on the door awoke John with a start. He blinked, but nothing but darkness registered in his eyes, not even his hands he held to his face. As he was racking his brains to figure out where the hell he was, a hard and heavy arm fell over his chest and pulled him into a warm and very naked body, complete with morning wood.

“Cap’n Waite, sir!” a voice called.

“What is it?” Waite grumbled, pressing his erection against John’s hip, and the previous night flooded back. The dinner, the diamonds, the fuck. Oh, God, the incredible fuck.

“There’s something ye must see on deck.” Crow’s muffled voice floated through the room.

“I’ll meet you there, Crow.”

“Hurry, sir. It’s the other ship.”

“The Ghost,” John said and palmed the table next to them, feeling for the flint. He coaxed a flame and lit a candle, and enjoyed the flickering light casting shadows along Waite’s body as he rose from the bed. Both men were dressed in a few moments. Waite locked up the box of diamonds before the two raced to the top deck. Staring over the railing, John’s eyes settled on The Ghost. The ship was within a few yards from The Black Devil, so close he could see the faces of his old crewmembers.

“How the hell did it get so close undetected, Crow?” Waite growled.

“I donna know, sir. There was no moon or stars. They crept upon us like a…”

“Like a ghost.” John finished his sentence. “It is a quiet ship, I will agree.” John jerked his head toward the white flag blowing in the wind off the main stern. “He’s surrendering to us.”

A tall man appeared at the railing of The Ghost. “That Oz?” Waite asked.

“Aye, that’s him.” John said, his chest tightening as he recalled the last time he’d seen his ex-lover. After the mutiny, Oz had personally released the rope that tethered the dinghy to The Ghost, sending John into the sea without even meager provisions.

Oz’s black hair blew around his shoulders as he held his hand to his head in salute. “Permission to come aboard The Black Devil!” he shouted.

John stared at the man who once shared both his confidences and his bed.

Waite turned to John. “Your decision, Siege.”

John held Oz’s gaze in silent challenge. As though he sensed the showdown, Oz finally cast his eyes downward, conceding the first of what was sure to be many battles that day. “Let him aboard!” John shouted to the crew, and Oz’s eyes met his again. John stood tall, his icy stare directed at his betrayer.

John waited in the same chair he’d found Waite in when he was first summoned to the captain. He respectfully rejected Waite’s wishes to question Oz together. Oz and John had unfinished business, he explained to Waite. Waite offered his private quarters and secured John with guards in case Oz decided to retaliate, an act that would be sure to be a death sentence. John agreed to the guards but doubted he’d need them.
